From the heath of fire to gas lamps and lightbulbs. Throughout centuries humanity has been trying different ways to lighten up its surroundings. Who would’ve thought that these would contribute to our planet’s destruction? I first thought pollutant is identical to Carbon dioxide, Sulfur, Mercury, and everything in between, turns out that lamps can also cause pollution. Anyway, what is light pollution? From what I understand, light pollution is pollution caused by excessive use of artificial lights. Citylights, spotlights, porch light, and everything that emerge light are all contributing to this problem.

For those who are living in a city, behind the bustling city lights, have you ever stop for a minute and looked at the sky at night? How is it look? According to me, it’s all pitch black and smoggy. It is disheartening because when I was younger, my parents would haul me outside at night to see the stars. They would tell me that stars blink and planets don’t. But the one that shines the brightest would be the Morning Star, which is not a star by any chance. Now when I look up to the sky, I wouldn’t catch a glimpse of it. In language school, my English teachers told me that stars are uncountable because there are billions of them. But where I live, I could prove them wrong, I see the stars and it’s countable. Last night, I saw three of them even though the sky was clear of obscuring clouds.

Now that we are aware of this ongoing issue, what can we do about it? First of all, we have to use artificial lights mindfully. Especially, outdoor lightings. Maybe we don’t need much lighting outside at night, we still have the moonlight as our friend after all.
